There is very little you will need to do. If access is required to get to the rear or sides of the building you will need to be at home. The survey will only be completed if there is a large enough differential between outside and inside temperatures, therefore the heating needs to have been on recently within the home.
Thermography measures surface temperatures by using infrared cameras. These specialist tools see light that is in the heat spectrum (not visible to the human eye). The photos show the temperature variations of the building, these may exist through poor insulation, damp or air leakage. The colours range from white for warm regions to black for cooler areas.
As wet insulation conducts heat faster than dry insulation, the images can detect leaks.
Infrared film used in a standard camera is not as sensitive and can not detect heat loss.
